PURPOSE:To automatically detect a region of an original to be read by applying direct region designation while an original is placed on an original platen or placing the original on the original platen. CONSTITUTION:The original platen 2 is provided with a pressure sensing sensor array 3 being a means detecting a read region of the original. In placing the original 6 to a reference location of the original platen 2 normally, the original image is read by an image scanner 5 and stored once in a memory and recorded by a printer. The region is designated as it is by operating a region to be read while the original is placed on the original platen and the region designation is attained, the read region of the original is designated by a simple operation or the read region of the original provided on the original platen is detected automatically by placing the original on the original platen, and even when the original being a book is placed at a position deviated from the reference position, the original region is read automatically.
