PURPOSE:To omit the externally fitted connection of a parallel/serial conversion circuit when a picture display system is built up and to attain a highly reliable small-sized and lightweight system by incorporating a parallel/serial conversion circuit, etc., and giving a serial output mode function. CONSTITUTION:A dynamic memory (DRAM) with a multibit constitution incorporates the parallel/serial conversion circuit such as a shift register 21, a serial output/parallel output mode deciding circuit 22, and a data output mode switching circuit 23. If a signal inversion OE is H, the circuit 22 decides it in a serial output mode, and controls the circuit 23. Instead of a parallel output from a memory cell array 7, a serial output of the register 21 is selected, and taken out through a data output buffer 11. If the picture display system is built up through the use of this DRAM, the externally fitted connection of the parallel/serial conversion circuit is made unnecessary, whereby the small- sized, lightweight and highly reliable system can be obtained.
