PURPOSE:To enhance the finish appearance of the outer panel of a car or various structures, by changing the surface state and surface change of each of bottom coat, intermediate coat and top coat films consisting of four layers. CONSTITUTION:First intermediate coat of a second layer is applied to a primer and cured and polished. Next, second intermediate coat of a third layer is applied and cured to form a film and top solid color or metallic color coat of a fourth layer is applied to said film and finished. Surface control agents of a silicone type such as polydimethylpolysiloxane or polymethylphenylpolysiloxane, a polyvalent carboxylic acid type or a fluorocarbon resin type are appropriately added to thus formed films of a 4-coat 4-bake system to adjust the surface tensions of said films within a range of 44-51 dyne/cm<2>. By this method, the finish of a vertical surface is enhanced and the sucking of the second intermediate coat in the top coat is prevented.
