Crude mixture, eg from coal tar distillation, contng. 2,6-dimethylphenol and monomethylphenols is (a) led with methanol through Al2O3 catalyst bed partic. 9-, 4-or gamma-Al2O3 with 50 - 250 sq. m./g. surface area, at 250 - 375 degrees C, to methylate monomethylphenols to higher boiling polymethylphenols, and (b) 2,6-dimethylphenol, useful in aromatic polyether, anti-oxidant and plasticiser production, separated from the higher methylation products. |
