A masking sheet material comprises a sheet of flexible material 10, 10<SP>1</SP> having a layer 11, 11<SP>1</SP> of a pressure-sensitive adhesive on only one side thereof and along one or both longitudinal edges thereof, the width of the adhesive layer or layers being a minor fraction of the width of the sheet, and a release coating 13, 13<SP>1</SP> on the opposite side and along the same longitudinal edge or edges of the sheet, the width of the release coating being not less than the width of the adhesive layer or layers but still a minor fraction of the width of the sheet. The sheet may be of sulphite or kraft paper impregnated with a resinous or rubbery polymer, e.g. rubber or synthetic rubber latex, neoprene, copolymers of butadiene with styrene isobutylene, methyl methacrylate, acrylic nitrile and alpha methacrylic nitrile, fluorochemical materials, chromium stearic acid complex, and ketene dimers. The release coating may comprise any suitable silicone based material. The pressure-sensitive adhesive may lie along only one longitudinal edge of the sheet and the release coating may lie along the same longitudinal edge but on the opposite side of the sheet. The width of the impregnation 12, 12<SP>1</SP> with the polymer may be substantially that of the adhesive layer. The sheet material, which may take the form of a roll comprising a plurality of convolutions, may contain from 8 to 9 pounds of polymer solids per ream. The width of the sheet material may be from 6 to 36 inches and the width of the individual adhesive layer or layers is from three-eighths to five-eighths of an inch. |
