PURPOSE:To attain the reading of a bar code regardless of the width of the bar code by reading the space of one side at the opposite side of the one side, and inputting the logical sum data of a stored read data at every repeated scan to a decoder as a bar code data. CONSTITUTION:When spaces 11a and 11b are read at the both sides of a bar code 10, read bar codes are inputted to a decoder 5. When only the space 11a at the one side of the bar code 10 is read, a read head 1 is moved making perform a self-scan repeatedly, and the read data is stored on a memory 3 every repeated scan. When the space 11b at the one side is read, the logical sum of the read data stored on the memory 3 at every repeated scan is found at an OR circuit 4, and is inputted to the decoder 5. Thereby, when the width of the bar code 10 is narrower than the reading width (w) of the read head 1, the bar code 10 can be read without shifting the read head 1, and when it is wider than the reading width (w), the bar code 10 can be read by shifting the read head 1 in arrow head X direction.
