[Also in Divisions C2 and C5] An anti-microbial composition comprises compounds of the formula: wherein Hal represents Cl, Br and/or F; R represents H or halogen, R<SP>1</SP> represents H, CH 3 , CF 3 , CH 3 O, NO 2 or halogen; and Z represents H, (C 1 -C 6 ) alkyl, an ammonium group or a metal equivalent; in admixture with a solid diluent or carrier or in admixture with a liquid diluent or carrier containing a surface-active agent. Conventional diluents and carriers are specified. Specified surface-active agents are polyoxyethylene-fatty acid esters, polyoxyethylene-fatty alcohol ethers, alkyl or aryl sulphonates, lignin, sulphite waste liquors and methyl cellulose. Examples are given in which water, a tanning agent solution, a gum arabic solution, leather and wood pulp are treated with compounds of the above formula. |
