PURPOSE:To obtain the titled medium having high output and a high S/N without contaminating a calender by incorporating a binder contg. a sulfo group and/or a phospho group as their alkali metal salts and an azo pigment compd. contg. a sulfo group and/or a carboxyl group or their salts into a magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:Since the binder contains a sulfo group and/or a phospho group as their alkali metal salts, the viscosity of a magnetic paint is lowered, the dispersibility of magnetic powder is improved, hence the surface smoothness of the magnetic layer is ameliorated, and a calender is not contaminated. Furthermore, since the magnetic layer contains the azo pigment compd. contg. a sulfo group and/or a carboxylic group or their salts, the dispersion of magnetic particles is stabilized, the coating property is improved, and the electromagnetic transducing characteristics such as S/N and an RF output are remarkably improved.
