PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having excellent corrosion resistance, good magnetic characteristics and excellent noise characteristic by providing a thin magnetic film contg. Ni, Cr, and Ru respectively at specified atomic ratios and consisting of the balance Co. CONSTITUTION:This magnetic recording medium has the thin magnetic film essentially consisting of Co and contg. 15-30at% Ni, 1-15at% Cr, and 0.1-5at% Ru. The squareness ratio is small and output is inferior if Ni is <15at%. The value of saturation magnetization decreases and output characteristic is inferior if Ni exceeds 30at%. The effect of improving the corrosion resistance is inferior if Cr is <1at%. The magnetic characteristics are inferior and the output is considerably deteriorated if Cr is incorporated in the film more than 15at%. No effect is admitted if Ru is <=0.1at%. The magnetic characteristics are inferior and no output is obtd. if Ru exceeds 5at%.
