PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having excellent corrosion resistance and good magnetic characteristics by providing a thin magnetic film contg. Ni, Pt, Ru, and Ti respectively at specified atomic ratios and consisting of the balance Co. CONSTITUTION:This magnetic recording medium has the thin magnetic film contg. 15-30at% Ni, 1-12at% Pt, 0.1-5at% Ru, 0.1-5at% Ti and the balance substantially Co. The squareness ratio is inferior if Ni is <15at%, and the saturation flux density B decreases if Ni exceeds 30at%. There is no effect of the squareness ratio and corrosion resistance if Pt is <=1at% and the saturation flux density decreases of Pt exceeds 12at%. The corrosion resistance is poor if Ru is 0.1at% and the values of the squareness ratio and saturation magnetization decrease if Ru exceeds 5at%. The noise characteristic is not improved if Ti is <0.1at% and the squareness ratio is inferior if Ti exceeds 5at%.
