PURPOSE:The reaction between a ferric trialkoxide and a long-chain fatty acid is carried out in an inter gas atmosphere in an aprotin polar solvent to readily produce the titled compound of high purity in the form of trisoap type, which is used as a water repellent, stabilizer or surface active agent. CONSTITUTION:The reaction of 1mol of a ferric trialkoxide of formula I (R<2> is alkyl) such as ferric trimethoxide with 3-300mol of a long-chain fatty acid of formula II (R' is 10-26C alkyl) such as stearic acid is carried out in an aprotic polar solvent such as anhydrous tetrahydrofuran in an inert gas atmosphere such as argon gas atmosphere at 10-200 deg.C for 0.1-10hr. Then, the reaction product is dried under reduced pressure at room temperature to give a powder of trisoap type compound of formula III such as ferric stearate. The amount of the aprotic polar solvent used in the reaction is 10-10<4>pts.wt. per 1pt.wt. of the compound of formula I. It is preferred to carry out the reaction, as the alcohol of formula IV, a by-product, is excluded out of the reaction system, e.g., by azeotropic distillation or the like. |
