PURPOSE:To attain rapid reading of an optical card by adhering the optical card to the periphery of a drum, continuously rotating the optical card unitedly with the drum and moving a light irradiating part and a photodetecting part in accordance with the rotation of the drum. CONSTITUTION:When an optical card 8 is inserted from a carry-in part 4, the optical card 8 is entered a gap between a rotary drum 21 and guide rollers 3 by a driving roller 43 and a driven roller 42 which form a pair of upper and lower rollers, the whole length of the optical card 8 is regulated by the plural guide rollers 3 and the optical card 8 is continuously rotated unitedly with the drum 21 so as to be adhered to the periphery of the drum 21. On the other hand, parallel beams radiated from the light irradiating part 6 arranged on the outer periphery of the drum 21 irradiates a limited range of recording carrier on the rotating optical card 8 and the reflected light is made incident upon the photodetecting part 7 to read out the contents recorded in the limited range. The light irradiating part 6 is moved in the cylindrical axis direction of the drum 21 up to the limited range width in accordance with the rotation of the drum 21, so that the whole width of the recording carrier can be read out by rotating the optical card 8 continuously by several revolutions.
