PURPOSE:To reduce CO2 to methanol at ordinary temp. and pressure by electrolyzing an electrolytic soln. satd. with CO2 with an electrode modified with a quinone compound. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous soln. contg. a metallic complex having homogeneous catalysis such as pentacyanoferrate (II) and primary alcohol and satd. with CO2 is used as an electrolytic soln. An electrode obtd. by mixing a quinone compound such as indigo or alizarin with graphite powder in a proper ratio, adding the mixture to 5% soln. of a methyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid copolymer in 'Ethylcellosolve(R)' to obtain a paste and coating a platinum plate with the resulting paste is used as the cathode in the cathode chamber of an electrolytic cell. A platinum plate is used as the anode in the anode chamber. The electrolytic soln. is electrolyzed at ordinary temp. and pressure in the cell to produce methanol in the cathode chamber.
