In the apparatus of Specification 1,078,979, wherein a mould plate 15 provided with a circular opening 29 is reciprocable, between fixed plates 25, 26, into alignment with a feed opening 13 through which ground meat or fish material is forced by a feed device which is forwardly reciprocable within a hopper in a raised position and rearwardly reciprocable in a position lowered therefrom, the upper fixed plate 25 is provided with a cavity defining surface, which may be provided in an insert 41, having a plurality of radially extending grooves 37 inclined towards the plate periphery. The grooves 37 extend generally across the feed flow stream in the mould plate opening 29 so that a mixing action occurs by directing the material along paths 40, initially away from and then towards the side wall 30, whereby density irregularities in the moulded patty are avoided. When the mould plate 15 is reciprocated out of alignment with opening 13 to the discharge position, the material within the insert 41 will be retained therein and dislodged therefrom into the empty opening 29 returning on the next moulding cycle. |
