PURPOSE:To eliminate the necessity of exchanging the magnetic stripes of all bankbooks at once so as to easily cope with a change in the recording density of the magnetic stripe, by determining the recording density of the magnetic stripes of bankbooks, etc., by detecting feature parts, such as notch, etc., of the bankbooks and automatically reading and writing data. CONSTITUTION:On magnetic bankbooks 20 and 20' provided with magnetic stripes (MS) 21 and 21' having different recording densities a featured part, such as a notched part 22, etc., is installed to one magnetic bankbook 20' having a different recording density. The featured part of the notch 22, etc., is detected by means of a sensor 1 and the recording density is decided with a decision circuit 2, and then, data are recorded and reproduced in accordance with the detected recording density. Therefore, recording and reproducing magnetic data on and from a magnetic bankbook provided with an MS having a different recording density can be easily and surely performed.
