PURPOSE:To economically extract and separate naphthoquinone and phthalic acid from a slurry, by oxidizing naphthalene in the vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst using an aromatic hydrocarbon having a specified boiling point and specific gravity as a solvent and collecting the resultant reaction product with water to give the slurry. CONSTITUTION:Naphthalene is oxidized in the vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst to give a reaction product containing mainly naphthoquinone and phthalic anhydride, which is then collected with water to afford a slurry. The naphthoquinone and phthalic acid are separated from the slurry. In the process, an aromatic hydrocarbon having >145 deg.C boiling point and <=0.9 specific gravity, e.g. cumene, o--p-cymene, pseudocumene, mesitylene or/and hemimellitene, are preferably used as a solvent to carry out extraction, preferably at 40-95 deg.C. Thereby, the above-mentioned solvent which is well separated from an aqueous phase with a small loss of the solvent because of a high vapor pressure is used to advantageously extract and separate the naphthoquinone in the oily phase and phthalic acid in the aqueous phase.
