PURPOSE:To aim at enhancing the wear resistant capability and the antiseizure capability of a piston ring, by forming a nitride layer on the outer peripheral sliding surface of the piston ring, and by forming a film composed of a compound dispersed plating layer over the nitride layer. CONSTITUTION:A steel material suitable for obtaining a nitriding treated layer exhibiting a satisfactory wear-resistant capability is preferably used as a basic material of a piston ring, which is a steel material containing 0.16%-1.3% of C and 12-19% of Cr or a chromium steel further containing a hit of Mo or V. The sliding surface of the piston ring is subjected to a nitriding treatment to enhance the wear-resistant capability of the sliding surface. Further, in order to enhance the antiseizure capability of the piston ring, a compound dispersed plating layer having a thickness of 0.5-20mum is formed on the nitriding treated layer.
