PURPOSE:To enable stable recording without being affected by an environment, by reciprocally moving a carriage when it is detected that temp. is a predetermined value or less and continuing reciprocal movement before the speed of reciprocal movement reaches a predetermined speed. CONSTITUTION:The light from a light emitting element 227a passing through the equal interval slits 224a of a slit 224 intermittently reaches a light emitting element 230a through the equal interval slits 229a of a light receiving slit 229 moving along with a carriage while the light receiving element 230a outputs an ON/OFF signal corresponding thereto. A motor M1 is subjected to servo control on the basis of said signal to scan the carriage at an equal speed. A sequence controller 1 receives the temp. signal 5 sent from a temp. sensor 2 through an A/D converter to scan the carriage when temp. is lower than predetermined one and the scanning speed of the carriage is measured by the signal from an encoder 19 and scanning is performed before the scanning speed reaches a predetermined one to start recording processing.
