PURPOSE:To settle stably a caisson at low cost in a short time by a method in which the cutting edge of a caisson is penetrated into the bottom of an excavated ground by operation of a jack using the weight as a reaction of the caisson body, and the caisson body is settled. CONSTITUTION:A jack 6 is operated by an oil-pressure unit 8, and a cutting edge 1 is penetrated into the ground by using the weight of a caisson body as a reaction. When the jack 6 is restored to its original position at the same time as the cutting edge 1 is penetrated, the body 2 is settled along the guide plate 3 of the cutting edge 1. In case where the body 2 does not settle, the jack 6 is contracted and the cutting edge 1 previously penetrated is lifted up by a jack 7 for lifting. The settling force for the caisson body 2 can thus be obtained without the use of sheet piles on the periphery and also of earth anchor for pulling.
