A constant current is superimposed on the rate meter (1) output via resistors (R1,R2) connected to its output ports. The potential (P1,P2) of one or both outputs is compared (V1,V2) with a demand potential (P3,P4). The comparator (V1,V2) generates a defect indication signal (F1,F2) if the output and demand potentials differ. If both potentials (P1,P2) are compared with demand values (P3,P4) and both comparators generate an output signal this is intepreted as an open circuit condition.
