PURPOSE:To produce a nickel plated material having a thin plating film having good brightness and excellent workability by subjecting an austenitic stainless steel having recrystalized structure to buffing then to semi-bright or bright plating. CONSTITUTION:The austenitic stainless steel having the recrystallized structure and excellent workability is subjected to buffing. Disk, bias, open, unit, unit cord and other buffs are suitably selectively used for polishing. The solid buffing material includes the fat and oil type materials prepd. by kneading an abrasive material such as fused alumina with a fatty acid, etc., or non-fat and oil types using glue, etc. The liquid buffing material includes emulsions of fats and oils dispersed therein with the abrasive material, etc. The steel subjected to such polishing is subjected to semi-bright or bright nickel plating. The nickel plating film having the excellent brightness and workability is thus obtd. even with thin plating of about 1mum.
