PURPOSE:To perform cleaning operation securely in a short time by allowing a developing device to perform cleaning operation by bias switching and also cleaning a much-residual-toner image on a photosensitive body by a belt for transfer paper conveyance. CONSTITUTION:An original on an original platen 2 is conveyed from the 1st transfer station C to the 2nd and the 3rd transfer stations M and Y and returns to its original position, and the same operation is repeated to perform transfer operation. At each transfer station, cleaning by bias switching at a developing part is carried out after the transfer operation. If a copying cycle is stopped during the transfer due to trouble, a toner image which is still left untransferred on a photosensitive drum 5 is transferred to a transfer belt 11 itself by making the transfer belt 11 to serve as a beltlike cleaning body to clean the photosensitive drum 5; and the toner image sticking on the transfer belt 11 is removed by the cleaning device 26 of the transfer belt 11.
