PURPOSE:To set the sound recording characteristic without fail by providing a limiter to the pre-stage or the post-stage of a reproducing signal level detec tion stage of a sound recording characteristic automatic adjusting system and limiting the reproducing signal in excess of the conversion enable range of an A/D converter to a prescribed level within the range. CONSTITUTION:The limit 6 limiting the level of a detection signal is provided to the input stage just before the A/D converter 5. When the detection level in excess of the A/D conversion enable region of the A/D converter 5 is impressed by the action of the limiter, the level is limited to a prescribed level with said region. The limiter 6 has a known constitution comprising a resistor R, a diode D and a diode bias power supply E. Thus, it is possible to set a sound recording bias near the optimum bias value to a tape having a large proper bias value.
