The output of a calculating machine is punched order-by-order in eight-hole paper tape under control of a program punched card, rows of which are examined sequentially and compared with the setting of operation keys of the keyboard to control the transfer to tape. As shown the calculating machine has eleven decimal orders, the contents of which are represented by the position of sliding contacts 209 on digit bars 211. These bars are connected to a diode coding matrix 318 so that any energized slider will cause the operation of punch electromagnets 306 &c. and also over transistor 325 energize tape advance mechanism. This is cam-coupled to switches 369, 370 which operate a stepping switch S with sliders S-A, B and C to advance to the next decimal order for scanning the calculator digits in sequence. There are corresponding digit switches IK I-XI controlled by eleven columnar positions on the program card so that the punch-out of digits can be made selective, e.g. a row of the card can be punched to order the punch-out of digits I-IV only, the stepping switch being advanced without energization of some of the sliders 209. Other columns on the punched card (it has 24) are used to control "conditional punch-out", in which the orders in them are compared with the setting of operation keys controlling slider 404, so that e.g. when the punch-out of a total is ordered such punch-out can be delayed until the summing operation in the calculating machine is complete. Suppression of zeros to the left of the most significant digit is possible, and various other conditions affecting the punching of the tape are discussed in detail. |
