PURPOSE:To suppress droppage of capacity due to reaction of a negative electrode with oxygen in a cell and to improve the cycle life after leaving as it is by providing a hydrogen absorbing alloy negative electrode, a nickel positive electrode and an alkaline electrolyte containing metal ions selected from silver ions, lead ions and copper ions. CONSTITUTION:A hydrogen occlusion alloy negative electrode and a nickel positive electrode are provided while metal ions selected from silver ions, lead ions and copper ions are contained in an alkaline electrolyte. The metal ions selected from silver ions, lead ions and copper ions contained in the alkaline electrolyte will increase the oxygen over voltage of the nickel positive electrode so as to suppress production of oxygen gas from the positive electrode during recharging or leaving as it is, suppress droppage of the capacity due to reaction of the hydrogen in the hydrogen absorbing alloy negative electrode and the oxygen, and suppress variation of the composition due to reaction of the hydrogen absorbing alloy and the oxygen. |
