PURPOSE:To enable a combustion of fine powder coals of less cost of energy to be carried out by a method wherein an auxiliary combustion gas with a concentration of oxygen higher than a specified value is preheated to above a specified temperature and the fine powder coals of normal temperature are ignited under a specific condition. CONSTITUTION:In a burner for an electric furnace for melting scraps and a melting furnace for aluminum and copper etc., an auxiliary combustion gas with a concentration of oxygen of more than 50% is preheated to above 300 deg.C and ignited together with fine powder coals of normal temperature, if T = a temperature of auxiliary gas( deg.C), C = a concentration of oxygen in the auxilia ry combustion gas (5), the combustion is performed to fulfill a condition of T>exp (14.14-1.84lnC). The fine powder coals can not make a stable flame in an atmospheric condition under a normal temperature even if oxygen is applied, a preheating of oxygen of about 300 deg.C is required and the required preheating temperature of auxiliary combustion gas is also varied in response to a concentration of oxygen in the auxiliary combustion gas. With the arrange ment, it is possible to perform a combustion of fine powder coals having less energy cost.
