PURPOSE:In the hydration of ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide, a metal salt of formic acid is used as a catalyst to give the titled compounds which are used as starting substance of polyester or surfactants, without formation of by-products in high yield. CONSTITUTION:In the presence of a catalyst of a metal formate, the starting substance of ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide is hydrated singly or in combination to give the objective compounds. The most preferable metal salt of formic acid is an alkali metal salt or alkaline earth metal salt and the amount is usually 1-50mol%, preferably 3-20mol% per mole of the starting substance. The amount of the water used in the hydration is 1-15mol, preferably 1-5mol per mole of the ethylene oxide or other starting substances. |
