Prepn. of a cpd. of formula (I) comprises reaction of a styrene oxide of formula (II) with a silylated amine of formula (III) in presnce of DMSO or absence of a solvent. The resulting silylated intermediate of formula (IV) is then hydrolysed. n is o, 1 or 2; R is F, Cl, Br, NO2, C1-4 alkyl, OH, COOH, CONH2 or di-(C1-4) alkylaminocarbonyl; R1 is C3-8 cycloalkyl or C1-6 alkyl; R2 and R3 are Ph or C1-4 alkyl and R4 is C1-4 alkyl. Provided that (1) when n is 2, then the R gps. are not both ortho; (2) when R is alkoxy it is not para; and (3) in (II) and (III) COOH, OH and CONH2 gps. are silylated with SiR2R3R4. Cpds. (I) are therapeutic agents, esp. antiobesity agents.
