PURPOSE:To improve the efficiency of the titled system by providing a common reception sub-channel in addition to a data line to reduce the overhead relating to line control of a CPU even in one-character reception control required for the connection of a non-procedure terminal. CONSTITUTION:When one-character notice is required for plural lines prior to data transmission/reception with a terminal equipment, a CPU 1 issues a reception command to a sub-channel A (common reception sub-channel) of a limit area 9 and issues an inhibit command designating an address of the channel A requesting transfer to each reception sub-channel for one-character reception. When a communication controller 2 receives it, the address of the channel A is transferred and stored in a control area (6-8) of the corresponding channel. When a character is received from the line, the own sub-channel address and the reception data are stored in a control area of the channel A and the data is transferred as if the data were received by the channel A. Thus, the overhead relating to line control of the CPU is reduced and the communication efficiency is improved.
