To recover the data sets which have been mixed into a video recording to describe the events in it, the character generators (5), which are used for mixing in the data sets, are used to recognize the mixed-in data as a function of these given symbols and information about a specified place in the video image, and to transmit it automatically to a computer (6) for further interpretation of or to acquire more information about the events held in the video image. According to the invention, the character generators (5), which are themselves known, are used to establish the times at which the data of the video signal is compared with given data. The data acquired in the comparison is transmitted via a shift register (9) in a controlled manner to a computer (6). In this way, the data recorded in the video recording is immediately available, and synchronized with a video recording as it is played back. <IMAGE>
