A tailstock assembly for a machine tool such as a lathe, comprises a housing 14 mountable on the lathe bed, a rotatable member 19 having a flange portion 24 and a shaft portion 20 located in the housing and carrying a centre C for supporting the end of a workpiece W, the member 19 being supported in the housing by fluid pressure means in the form of pressure regions 21 peripherally disposed in the housing around the shaft portion 20 and pressure regions 26 angularly spaced in the end of the housing, the regions together effecting radial and axial support for the member 19 during operation. The pressure regions are supplied with fluid by way of conduits and restrictors 22, 27. In the embodiments described with reference to Figs. 6 and 8 (not shown), the co-operating members are formed by the machine centre or parts thereof and the housing. In the embodiment described with reference to Fig. 10 (not shown), the rotatable member is radially and axially supported in the housing and axial thrust relative to the workpiece is provided by an external piston and cylinder assembly. |
