In a gear shift, in particular for bicycles driven with chains or belts, having a chain drive wheel which is divided into a plurality of toothed segments, the segments being radially adjusted between an area which defines a smallest diameter and an area which defines a largest diameter of the drive wheel, the most important consideration is to permit a selective disengagement of the segments from one another and thus a clean engagement of the chain, and to ensure a defined radial position of the segments. In order to achieve this, the toothed segments can be arranged in the drive chain wheel in a radially displaceable fashion. The adjusted segment is secured in the set gear-shift stage by means of a fixing device.
