A lighting system for display items, in particular items of jewellery, consists of a light-conducting carrier plate which is fed from a plurality of light sources or from one common light source. Provided on the upper side and/or underside of said carrier plate are apertures which serve for receiving the display items or as lighting apertures therefor. By means of corresponding light-conducting attachment pieces on these apertures in the upper side of the carrier plate, the items of jewellery can also be set in different positions in terms of their height. The lighting system allows flexible adaptation to all areas of application having a freely predeterminable proportion of indirect to direct lighting of the display items.
