In a tensioning device for a belt or chain drive in which the bearings (2, 3) of the wheels (4, 5) guiding the belt (11) or the chain are fixed on supporting bodies (1) not displaceable relative to one another and in which at least one of the bearings is flanged to its associated supporting body by means of bolts (7), the distance of one of the fastening bolts (7) from the adjacent bearing (3) can be varied by means of a guide piece (8) which alters the position of the hole (9) for this bolt (7). This makes it possible to tension the belt (11) with the bolt (7) at the bearing (2) to be displaced undone. <IMAGE>
