In the case of a program-controlled dishwasher, washing machine or the like which is provided with an electrical heating device for heating the washing or rinsing fluid, the heating device is connected via switching contacts of a heating switch (which is controlled by the program switching mechanism of the apparatus) in the form of a thermal relay to a supply circuit, and is disconnected therefrom. As a result of the use of a program-controlled thermal relay as the heating switch, premature wear of the relay contacts and seizing of said relay contacts are effectively prevented even in the event of the relay being driven erroneously or in an undesired manner. This is contributed to in particular, by the dedicated disconnection delay which is associated with a thermal relay and prevents the heating device being switched off during on-load operation.
