This instrument, a large number of which are in use, has the disadvantage that, as a result of the fuel-oil vapour in the tank, the cord carrying the weight becomes sticky and thus frequently sticks on the drum. As a result, the weight is left hanging in space and the indicator of the instrument then gives false readings. The invention provides for the installation in the housing of a roller which has a suction action and is arranged such that it frees the cord, covered with oil vapour, and also the drum, over which the cord runs, from sticky oil deposits. As a result, the display of the instrument is undisturbed as regards the weight or float hanging in space, and the instrument is prevented from giving false readings.
