PURPOSE:To make it possible to detect the quantity of scale caused by a metal salt in a liquid, by measuring the electric conductivity of a heated liquid to be tested. CONSTITUTION:A hermetically closed pressure container 1 is immersed in a thermostatic tank 13 having a heating medium 12 received therein and the heating medium 12 is heated to a predetermined temp. by a heater 10 while stirred by a stirrer 11 and allowed to stand for a predetermined time. Carbon dioxide generated during heating is expelled to the outside of the system by operating an appropriate valve 7. The electric conductivity of a liquid 2 tested during testing is monitored by an electric conductivity meter 8. After the finish of the test, the container 1 is taken out from the thermostatic tank 13 and quanched by water. After cooling, a flange 5 is taken out and the liquid 2 tested is transferred to a beaker and filtered by a membrane filter. In conformity to JIS, the concn. of calcium or magnesium of the filtrate is measured. At this time, from the difference of the concn. of calcium or magnesium of the liquid 2, quantity precipitated as scale is calculated as M-alkalinity.
