According to the invention, a bainite microstructure is obtained for steel-based components, which are subjected to hot deformation, by the addition of carbide-, nitride- and carbonitride-forming elements such as, for example, Nb to a steel having a carbon content of less than 0.3 per cent by weight; this microstructure is preserved even after hot deformation followed by controlled cooling. Alloy elements such as Mn, B and Mo assist the formation of bainite. A process of this type has the advantage that components such as, for example, lorry king pins, which are forged at temperatures of up to 1300 DEG C, no longer have to be re-hardened by a tempering stage after cooling, so that they still also have adequate toughness in addition to high strength. |
