PURPOSE:To set the resolution of a scale freely by using an optical recording medium where a pattern is writable as a scale and arranging a light emitting means and two optical systems at a movable part. CONSTITUTION:This device consists of the movable part 4 capable of moving on a specific track and the scale 5 parallel to the track. The optical recording medium where a pattern is writable is used as the scale 5, and the light emitting means 6, the 1st optical system which converges radiant light from the light emitting means on the scale 5, and the 2nd optical system which guides reflected light from the scale 5 to a detector 7 are arranged at the movable part 4. Thus, the writable optional recording medium is used, so the resolution of the scale 5 is set freely.
