This invention relates to catalyst compsn. which is useful as a catalyst for quality improvement reaction of coal gas. This catalyst compsn. is prepd. by coprecipitation of phyllosilicate with Feitknecht compd., Mex2+Mey3+(OH)2x+3y-2z(A2-)z.nH2O [Me2+= divalent metal, Me3+= trivalent metal, A-2= carbonate ion, The ratio of x/y is 1.5/1-4/1 . Before the coprecipitation, clay is added, and the clay is smectite or kaolinite.
