NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I [R<1> represents glucopyranously or tetra-O-lower alkanoyl-glucopyranousyl; R<2> represents H or (phenyl-substituted) lower alkyl] or salt thereof. EXAMPLE:Ethyl D-4-[N-(4-beta-D-glucopyranosyloxy-2-hydroxy-3,3-dimethyl-n-butyr yl)amino]-n-butyrate. USE:An ameliorating agent for encephalometabolism and high level brain function with good absorbability and excellent sustainability. PREPARATION:A reactive derivative of a compound expressed by formula II [R<3> represents (phenyl-substituted) lower alkyl] with a compound expressed by the formula R<4>OH (R<4> represents glucopyranosyl or tetra-O-lower alkanoyl- glucopyranosyl) (example; tetra-O-acetyl-alpha-D-glucopyranosyl bromide, etc.) is reacted in a solvent such as ether at 0-80 deg.C in the presence of a deacidifying agent, preferably such as silver salicylate to obtain a compound expressed by formula III, which is then hydrolyzed or reduced.
