PURPOSE:To uniformalize the abrasion quantity of a polishing roller as a whole by swinging a polishing roller in the region where the both edge positions of the polishing roller nearly coincide with the both edge positions of a passing metal strip. CONSTITUTION:The edge position of a metal strip S is detected by a detector 9, and a pulse motor 5 is driven by the pulse signals supplied from the detector 9 so that the both edge positions of the polishing surface of a polishing roll 1 having the polishing surface over the width of the metal strip S nearly coincide with the both edge positions of the metal strip S. A sliding screw shaft 4 is revolved, and two sliding flanges 6 screwed with the screw shaft 4 are swung. The polishing roller 1 is swung by shifting it along the spline shaft 2 revolved at a certain speed by a motor 3, and the polishing roller is swung so that the both edges of the polishing surface of the polishing roller 1 nearly coincide with the both edge positions of each metal strip S.
