PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a blocking agent of alpha-receptor of sympathetic nervous system by a short process readily, by reacting a phenetylamine derivative with a substituted phenoxyacetaldehyde and reducing a reaction product. CONSTITUTION:A phenethylamine derivatibe shown by the formula I (R<1> is lower alkoxy; R<2> is lower alkyl) is reacted with a substituted phenoxyacetaldehyde shown by formula II (R<3> is lower alkoxy) and the reaction product is reduced to give a compound shown by formula III or its salt. Catalytic reduction using platinum oxide as a catalyst or reduction using a metallic hydroxide such as sodium boron hydride, etc., may be applied as the reduction. The reaction process is shortened, the treatment and operation are simple and since racemization will not occur in the reaction process, the aimed compound keeping a corresponding optical activity can be obtained when an optically active substance of the compound shown by formula I is used.
