PURPOSE:To reduce the useless time by forming an idle grinding feeding region having the higher speed than the grinding feed speed between the rapid traverse region and the grinding feed of the vertical shaft of a grindstone and stopping a table so that a work is set directly under an abrasive grindstone. CONSTITUTION:When switching to the idle grinding speed which is lower than the rapid traverse speed and higher than the grinding speed is performed from an idle grinding starting point 9 position, and further lowering is continued, the approach or contact of an abrasive grindstone and a work is detected at a point between the highest value 10 position of the material point and the lowest value 12 position of the material point. This point is the approach point or contact point 11 position, and the region up to this point forms the idle grinding feeding region 6. A grindstone head stops the lowering operation at the idle grinding feeding speed at the approach (or contact) detection point 11, and a table starts the traverse shift operation, and then starts the actual grinding through grinding feed, and carries out the grinding to a constant dimension point 13 position.
