PURPOSE:To obtain the polished surface having a small surface roughness by providing at least two kinds of tape-shaped polishing means for grinding the edge surface through a transparent glass nearly vertical to the axis center of an optical fiber and continuously moving said polishing means finely in the vertical direction, thus obtaining a spiral-shaped locus. CONSTITUTION:When an optical fiber 1 is nipped between the upper and lower holders 2a and 2b and an operation switch is turned ON, said optical fiber 1 shifts towards a glass plate 23, and a polishing position determining plate 26 rises, and a polishing tape for rough polishing travels. Then, the optical fiber 1 is attached onto the glass plate 32 through the rough polishing tape, and a subbase is fed so as to apply a pressing load, and at the same time, the positioning plate 26 is continuously moved finely in the vertical direction within the width of the rough polishing tape, and the edge surface polishing is completed. Then, the spiral locus can be obtained by the traveling in the fine vertical movement on the polishing tape, and the polished surface having a small surface roughness can be obtained. |
