NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R is 2-18C alkyl; A is -COO- or -OCO-; l and m are 1 or 2; n is an integer 2-8; mark* indicates asymmetric carbon). EXAMPLE:p'-(4-Methylhexyloxy)phenyl (+ or -)-p-octyloxycarbonyloxybenzoate. USE:One component of chiral smectic liquid crystal compositions, responsive at a very high speed, having memory effect, readily carrying out time sharing driving, usable in optical switching elements utilizing the chiral smectic C phase and suitable for graphic displays. PREPARATION:A compound expressed by formula II is reacted with a compound expressed by formula III in a basic solvent to give a compound expressed by formula IV, which is oxidized to afford a compound expressed by formula V. The resultant compound expressed by formula V is then reacted with a halogenating agent, e.g. SOCl2, etc., to give a compound expressed by formula VI, which is further reacted with a compound expressed by formula VII in a basic solvent to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I (A is -COO-).
