PURPOSE:To prevent a magnetic head from being subjected to deep biting of polishing grain so as to give smooth abrasive finishing to the magnetic head surface, by using acicular Cr2O3 of a definite form as an abrasive. CONSTITUTION:A polishing tape is formed by a non-magnetic supporter 1 having flexibility and coated with a polishing layer 2 made by kneading abrasive 4 consisting of Cr2O3 (polishing grain) and bond. In this case, the major axis of the polishing grain of acicular form composing the abrasive 4, is 0.3-2mum, the minor axis thereof is 0.01-0.1mum, acicular ratio is in a range from 1:5-1:30, and at formation of the coating layer 2, the polishing grains are aligned so that the minor axis direction of this polishing grain 4 is in accord with the tape thickness direction, therefore, a magnetic head 3 is polished at the abdomen side of the polishing grain 4 with bigger radius of curvature and thinner thickness without any chance of deep biting of polishing gain into the magnetic head 3. Therefore, this surface can be smoothly polished and finished without causing deep flaw on the magnetic head 3.
