PURPOSE:To perform efficient countercurrent washing by a reduced amount of a washing solution and to enhance dehydration effect, by making it possible to easily form a plurality of homogeneous and uniform layers of a slurry on filter cloth. CONSTITUTION:A plurality of thin layers of a substance to be treated are formed on filter cloth 1 byhh repeatedly supplying the substance to be treated onto said filter cloth 1 to form a cake with a uniform thickness on the entire surface of the upper filter cloth of the cake forming section of a vacuum tray 13. Subsequently, this cake is transferred to a washing section 11 along with the filter cloth 1 and washed but, because of the uniform cake layer, the washing solution becomes easier to diffuse over the entire surface of the cake layer and there is no irregularity in the diffusion of the washing solution per unit cake wt. Further, the washed cake is dehydrated in the dehydration section 12 of the rear stage. In this case, because the cake layer is uniform, the filtrate and passing air in the cake are averagely sucked under vacuum without wastefulness and dehydration effect is enhanced.
