PURPOSE:To handle two kinds of networks unitarily in the terminal side by using idle logical channel numbers to assign two kinds of network control mechanisms to respective channel numbers. CONSTITUTION:Reception data 11 of a circuit switching network 3 passes a physical layer control part 10 for circuit switching network, a data link layer control part 8 for circuit switching network connected to a line buffer memory part 9 for circuit switching network, a network layer control part 7 for circuit switching network, etc., in a communication adapter 2 and passes a data multiplexing/demultiplexing control part 6 to become facsimile data 5. Similarly, reception data 16 of a packet switching network 4 becomes data 5 also. An idle channel of logical channel numbers of the packet terminal is used to assign the control mechanism part for circuit switching network out of control mechanism parts for circuit switching network and packet switching network which are stored in one adapter 2. Thus, two networks are handled unitarily in a digital facsimile equipment 1 of the terminal in accordance with selection of logical channel numbers.
