PURPOSE:To prevent erroneous determining for the gear position due to slippage, by providing a means for determining the gear position in accordance with the ratio between the rotational speed of an engine and the speed of a vehicle and a means for compensating the gear position in accordance with the degree of the above-mentioned ratio within a reference vehicle speed range. CONSTITUTION:A determining and processing device 5 receives signals from an engine rotational speed detector 1 and a vehicle speed detector 3 to determine the gear position in accordance with the ratio between the rotational speed of the engine and the speed of the veicle, and to determine whether the vehicle speed is within a reference vehicle speed range or not. As a result of determination, when the vehicle speed is within the reference vehicle speed range and the ratio between the engine rotational speed and the vehicle speed exceeds a predetermined value, the determined gear position is compensated to a position which is lower than the gear position by one stage, but when it is below the predetermined value, it is compensated to a position which is higher than the gear position by one stage. Thereby, even if the torque of an automatic speed gear 4 is lowered due to slippage, the slippage ratio is compensated in a accordance with the vehicle speed to detect an actual gear position, precisely so that it is possible to prevent the gear position from being erroneously determined.
